A single mom sues Chicago Police for violating her civil rights

A 38-year-old single mother filed a federal lawsuit against the Chicago Police Department at the middle of last month. She accuses them of having used excessive force and of violating her civil rights during several raids of her home earlier this year.

According to the court filing, the single mom's South Side home was raided by Chicago Police on three separate occasions so far this year. In at least one instance, the woman's children were present when the tactical officers broke into her apartment. She alleges that they pointed guns in their faces on that occasion. They ultimately searched her home and left without pressing any charges against her.

In her filing, the woman chronicles how she holds down three different jobs to care for herself and her three children. She also describes how she's never been arrested for any felony offenses to include weapons or drug charges. It would seem that she, therefore, doesn't understand why she's being targeted by police for these raids.

The plaintiff describes how these repeated raids of the family's apartment have left both her and her children on "the verge of breakdown and despair".

Chicago police have yet to respond to the woman's lawsuit. When asked for comment, a spokesperson for the department noted that they're not allowed to comment on any pending lawsuits. It's unclear when the first hearing is scheduled for in this matter.

Some of the stories that are most often featured on the nightly news in Chicago are those that involve police brutality or misconduct. These aren't the only types of cases that have the potential of violating a person's civil rights though. Virtually anyone who deprives someone else of their liberties or freedoms can be sued for this. If you're wondering if what has happened to you warrants filing a lawsuit, then a civil rights attorney can let you know.
